US broadcasting corporation ABC interviewed former US Secretary of State Colin Powell:

Now out of government service, Powell is airing openly his disappointments and frustration on everything from the invasion of Iraq to the federal response to Hurricane Katrina.

It is a pity that Powell, like many other politicians, postponed speaking out until he was out of office.

When Powell left the Bush administration in January 2005, he was widely seen as having been at odds with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Vice President Dick Cheney over foreign policy choices.

It was Powell who told the United Nations and the world that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and posed an imminent threat.

He told Walters that he feels “terrible” about the claims he made in that now-infamous address — assertions that later proved to be false.

When asked if he feels it has tarnished his reputation, he said, “Of course it will. It’s a blot.

I’m the one who presented it on behalf of the United States to the world, and [it] will always be a part of my record.

It was painful. It’s painful now.”

A copy of Pablo Picasso’s famous anti-war painting Guernica, at the United Nations building in New York City as a warning, was covered up as “too realistic” during that 2003 speech by Colin Powell.

From the Google cache, 12/26/05:

Translated from an interview by Dutch daily NRC with Dutch foreign minister, Bernard Bot:

The speech in 2003 by then US Secretary of State Colin Powell in the United Nations security council about the [so-called] presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq tends to make, Bot says, ask him: “Colin, how did you feel then?

Were you lying while knowing better?”

Thank you DEAR KITTY, information about Powell or any others that lied is important. Also thanks for the Katrina material. I’m still trying to get my head round the idea that the Christian right consider it to be god’s revenge on all them voodoo worshipers. Seems like the godbotherers of the Abrahamic tradition — Judaic, Christian, Islam — are all as misanthropic as their boss. I much prefer humans like you, proving people can do for others since it’s basic humanity.

    Thanks for your reaction, TheArtThreAt!

Surely, not all Christians, Jews, and Muslims in the world are idiots in the Pat Robertson style.

What’s really interesting about this press release (for a program that

is that, until now, I have NOT heard ONE word about it from the press.

That is shocking, but not surprising.

Wilkerson actually used the word “hoax” and yet no one in the press
    picked this up.

Intelligence a ‘Hoax on the American People’*

NEW YORK, Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ — In an interview airing tonight [last
Friday] on the PBS weekly newsmagazine NOW, Colin Powell’s former Chief
of Staff Lawrence Wilkerson makes the startling claim that MUCH of
Powell’s landmark speech to the United Nations laying out the Bush
Administration’s case for the Iraq war was FALSE. “I participated in a
hoax on the American people, the international community, and the United
Nations Security Council,” says Wilkerson, who helped prepare the

The NOW report, which airs days before the third anniversary of Powell’s
speech, examines the serious doubts that existed about the key evidence
being used by the American government at the very time Powell’s speech
    was being planned and delivered.

“I recall vividly the Secretary of State walking into my office,”
Wilkerson tells NOW. “He said: ‘I wonder what will happen if we put half
a million troops on the ground in Iraq and comb the country from one end
to the other and don’t find a single weapon of mass destruction?'” In
fact, NO weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq.

NOW, hosted by David Brancaccio, airs Friday nights at 8:30 on PBS
    (check local listings).
