Associated Press reports:

By LIZ SIDOTI

WASHINGTON Oct 20, 2005 — Allegations that U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan burned the bodies of Taliban fighters couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Bush administration, already fighting legislation in Congress that would impose standards on the Pentagon’s treatment of detainees.

Lurid television pictures of the incident also may further tarnish the U.S. image in the Middle East.

Senate Republicans said the alleged U.S. troop participation goes to the heart of why Congress must pass legislation to standardize techniques used in the detention, interrogation and prosecution of detainees in the war on terrorism.

World Socialist Website? Ya think they may be biased? Just a bit.

    Quote:
There simply wasn’t enough room on the rocky hilltop above Gonbaz village in southern Afghanistan for the U.S. platoon and the corpses of the two Taliban fighters. The Taliban men had been killed in a firefight 24 hours earlier, and in the 90 degree heat, their bodies had become an unbearable presence, soldiers who were present have told TIME. Nor was the U.S. Army unit about to leave — the hilltop commanded a strategic view of the village below where other Taliban were suspected to be hiding.

Earlier, Lt. Eric Nelson, the leader of B Company, I-508 platoon leader had sent word down to Gonbaz asking the villagers to pick up the bodies and bury them according to Muslim ritual. But the villagers refused — probably because the dead fighters weren’t locals but Pakistanis, surmised one U.S. army officer.

It was then that Lt. Nelson took the decision that could jeopardize his service career. “We decided to burn the bodies,” one soldier recounts, “because they were bloated and they stank.”

That version of the story by PsyOp troops is not even accepted by the US government. It also is certainly not accepted by the Australian “embedded” journalist who filmed it. In an interview, he said the burning of tbe bodies (sacrilege in Islam) was a PsyOp tactic to “smoke out” Taleban fighters. Confirmed by the sound recording accompanying the film of US soldiers shouting anti gay taunts at a supposed hiding Taliban audience. Confirmed by other US soldiers.

  2. good job, weather it is to keep the smell down or smoke them out – good job. Bleeding heart people with no idea want to cry war crime and human rights, what a lod of crap. Get with the program and understand the situation the war fighter is placed in. the insurgent does not care about you, your beliefs, your caring about their religion or their rights, they think you are dogs and hate you and want to kill you. This is a fact. Leave these guys to do their job as required. If you want to pass judgment, sign up, put ona uniform, go on patrol and do some fighting. If not – give it a rest or give your fighting men some support.

  3. Administrator – burning bodies, human or animal, is a commonly accepted practice world wide when hygiene is a concern. The greatest enemy of any army in recorded history is disease. It is a “war crime” if it is done to intentionally demean the deceased or the enemy. Now given that terrorists are not granted “combatant” status by CF in Afghanistan you should be careful about quoting legislation and policy. I understand your point of view and welcome your comments but I think you need to look at the context of the burning itself. It is obvious that the body is not in a clearly visible position so the “smoking out and violating” theory holds little water. Does it look like they are standing around watching something being burnt, yes it does. Remember that they are terrorists. Unless you have had to deal with any sort of similar situation, and before you go off ona rant I have, you should be careful about throwing stones. Cheers.

  4. Quote in #6: “the “smoking out and violating” theory holds little water.” In comment 4#, you are on record as thinking that quite plausible; and you applauded it. This is a sign of sickness.

Even the criminal regime of Adolf Hitler used to bury shot down British or US air force people with military honours. They were not as considerate with, eg, Soviet Red Army or partisan people, who were considered semi Asian “Untermenschen” in their racist theories.

  5. Like i said, I see your point. And yes it is a kind of sickness. So when you have to sleep amongst dead bodies, shelter behind dead and rotting bodies, the ground is too hard or frozen, or it is too dangerous to bury them, when it becomes unsafe for these bodies to remain, and you are in that situation, then judge. Until then how about you and the rest of the bleeding hearts who like to compare everything to a war crime or the Nazi’s, give it a rest, or even better, sign up and do a tour in a combat zaone as a gun slinger. Thanks for your pariticpation.

  6. Re #8: As I said earlier, in comment#1, that version of why dead bodies were burnt may be right in your imagination. However, it is wrong in reality:

In Nazi Germany, people clainming that Jews, Roma, gay people etc. should have equal rights; that there should be trade union rights, and no wars, were also dismissed as “bleeding hearts”.

  7. Yes fine expansion of a thought process. Lets compare everything to the Nazi’s. As I see you like to reference previous comments. Re #8 : give it a rest, or even better, sign up and do a tour in a combat zaone as a gun slinger. Thanks once again for your participation. Out.

  8. I am not a serving US soldier. I am a serving solider in another allied nation. I am a guy who has volunteered to serve in many disturbing and distressing places. I am a Cavalry soldier. So I am a warfighter. So I know what it is like at the pointy end when the chips are down. What happened to that soldier is tragic, like so many other tragic things that happen to all serving members. I dont agree with all of the things that happen, and I do not know enough about the incident you are talking about to comment on it. What I do know is that to make things change you generally need a guy with a gun, some of his mates, and a bit of arse kicking done by all of them. I am aware that this is not always the ideal solution but it is what we have. What I want from you is a bit of understanding and a bit of support to guys who are put in situations and are forced to come up with solutions that are not always ideal. Sometimes the best solution you may have really isnt that good at all, but it is what you have. Grab a flag and start waving, or go to a fund raiser for wounded soldiers. Whatever it is you do when you and I are not gobbing off at each other I just hope that some of it is spent supporting the blokes who are working so hard. Remember mate, Freedom is not free. Cheers.

  10. Administrator. Do ya hate America much? Or is it the Bush derangement syndrome?

Were you there? Yes, the Psy-Ops guys might have used the burning of the bodies to help flush other Taliban out. Yet, unless you were there, you should not be too hard on men who were. I wasn’t there. I can’t seem to find any punishment for those men, was there any?

Oh, and I did not see a link for your claim of “violating dead bodies *is* a war crime, even officially in the books of the US Bush administration.”

Also, can ya go to this link http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/183865.php and then, come back and ask this question…….”Sure you would not like it to happen to dead US soldiers?” If you would like, I can post the numerous times it has happened to US Troops. Although, search as a I Might, I don’t seem to be able to find any link to you writing about how terrible it is? Hmm…I wonder why. You, much like Google and Youtube, you seem to be a bit against the USA. JMHO. You can type in this with Google and see how many stories you see on the first page, against US Troops.

Type in what does the Geneva convention say about desecration of bodies into Google, which is a far left search engine. Tell me, what results did you find?

I found 8 out of 10 showing stories of US Soldiers committing the act or accused of committing the act and or flushing the Koran down the toilet.

Type in Us soldiers’ bodies desecrated Google and you will find 7 out of 10 showing stories about alleged US troops abusing the Taliban, etc….

How many days, weeks and months did we hear about the abuse of Iraqi prisoners at the hands of US Troops? Now, try and find how many days we had stories non stop about US troops being butchered?

What would you have done? Laid down next to those bodies? Hid behind them? Wait, have you served? Seen combat?

  11. Re #16: As for the Geneva convention on burning dead bodies (violated by this act in Afghanistan), it is in Article 17. See here.

Google and YouTube are big US capitalist corporations. That you see them as “Left” and “anti American” might indicate a state of paranoia. Probably, you think that the notorious forgery The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is true as well.

  12. Article 17 of the G.C. seeing the bulk of the MSM in the USA as being left, liberal is not paranoia. It is a sad and yet, simple fact. Me does thinketh that you hate the United States or at least you had the Bush-derangement syndrome.. So, have you served in the Military, in a combat zone, in a combat job skill? Have you been in contact with the enemy where you were being shot at?

Have you been stuck with a dead body in a place where the temp gets high? Was there a problem (threat) with the bodies and the safety of the soldiers there?

If they were forced to burn the bodies and were able to use that to get more of the Taliban to engage them like men, and not like the cowardly fighters they are….well, that is what they decided to do, based on being there. Again, I was NOT there. Were you?

  13. Hi DEL061, you start your comment on this blog mentioning Article 17 of the Geneva Convention. Which establishes the illegality of burning dead bodies here. But you do not draw any conclusions from that.

That the mainstream, corporate, media in the USA are far from “liberal” is a fact. See, eg, how those media reacted to Bush’s “Mission Accomplished” speech. See here.

The Australian journalist who reported this certainly was there.

Re #21: good to see the racist genocidal drive of wars like in Afghanistan in all its naked “honesty”; contrary to the hypocritical blahblahblah of people like George W Bush (included those in the present US administration) about the Afghan war supposedly being about human rights, women’s rights, etc.
