Mood: Listening Playing: Four green fields

Tonight in the theatre, various artists performed.

First on stage was local slam poet Jaap Montagne.

After Jaap Montagne were Blue Monday.

They played various types of Irish folk music, both instrumentals and with vocals.

Among their songs were Off To Dublin In The Green; and The Galway Shawl.

Also Four Green Fields.

A song ostensibly on a farming woman and her family facing unnamed crooks trying to take away her land.

However, this is a thinly veiled metaphor for the history of Ireland with its invasions and occupations from England.

A history which can also be heard in songs (not performed tonight by Blue Monday) like The British Army; and Some Say The Devil Is Dead.

And other songs by the Wolfe Tones.

After a pause, I did my column on George W. Bush, “Intelligent Design” and the Divine (were they really??) voices in his head telling him to invade Iraq.

The young rappers of Horizontaal were next.

One of their raps criticized Bush’s so called war on terror.

Then, Jaap Montagne came back for his second set.

This time not as a poet, but as a singer and guitar player.

All his songs of tonight were Bob Dylan songs.

Including Like a rolling stone; I shall be released; Love Minus Zero; and Just like a woman.

I’ve been a life-long admirer of Dylan and his output. The interview with Dylan was taken from ten hours of original footage, so edited massively. I appreciated Scorcese’s labor and I’ve got the DVD to watch again whenever I like. After seeing reporters and the public trying to get a handle on Dylan and failing terribly,(shown in this film) I can see why Dylan chose to retreat a lot into privacy particularly after the accident which was life-changing.

He’s a Gemini, mercurial and hard to pin down. Ever try to catch mercury besides being poisonous? 😉 I’m a Gemini myself, four planets in this sign. So I understand Dylan in my soul that needs no interpretation.

Thanks for the link to this article anyway, an interesting take.
