By Lianne McLeod:
The baby hippo (Owen) was separated from his parents during the tsunami of Dec 26, 2004.
He was rescued from the sea and taken to a wild animal park, where he latched onto the old Aldabra tortoise (Mzee).
The first night they met, Mzee wasn’t too happy about Owen’s attention, but by the following morning Owen was photographed snuggled up to Mzee (a photo which is now one of my all time favorites!).
A year and a half later, Owen and Mzee are still buddies.
I just discovered Owen and Mzee‘s caretaker has a great weblog, and you can read the continuing saga of this unlikely pair and the other residents of the sanctuary where the live.
