More yet on Fernando Botero’s Abu Ghraib exhibition in The Hague.
This is translated from the printed edition of Dutch daily Leidsch Dagblad, 1 June 2006, ‘by our art editors’.
It incorporates the earlier ANP article on Botero, but is more extensive:
Full sculpture by Botero in The Hague
‘The Hague Sculpture is the most beautiful show of all’
The Hague – Of the nineteen shows which Fernando Botero had during his career, all over the world, he thinks ‘The Hague Sculpture 2006’ is the most beautiful one.
‘Under the greenery my sculptures look fantastic’, the Colombian artist said on Wednesday in The Hague during the presentation of fourteen sculptures which he choose for the exhibition from his private collection and had cast anew. …
Botero by far prefers the leafy lane of the Lange Voorhout to Park Avenue in New York City, one of many places where the sculptures had been earlier, he said on Wednesday morning, showing journalists around.
‘There, you could look at them only from a taxi. However, here you can just walk past them’. …
Suggestions that the female torso was inspired by a group of sculpture from [ancient] Malta, led to puzzled eyes.
Someone else tries: ‘A symbol of fertility’.
‘If you make a fat woman, people always think of infertility or something’.
Botero thinks all this goes much too far.
He just was in his studio with a complete sculpture of a woman which he suddenly did not like any more.
So he just cut off its head and limbs. …
Similarly, Botero hopes that his Abu Ghraib drawings as well will be a ,,permanent accusation’’.
And that they will be exhibited in the United States.
In the autumn, they will be in a gallery in New York City.
However, Botero hopes that in the whole country the interest in the Abu Ghraib drawings will be as big as in his sculpture.
He has hope.
‘I am convinced that the majority of the United States public disagrees with this aggression‘.
