England: play on nazi Schacht, author Rebecca West, etc.

Rebecca WestBy Kate Hilman in Britain:

Focusing on the trial of Hjalmar Schacht, Tosca’s Kiss is a play about the Nuremberg trials.

Schacht has been described as Hitler’s money man.

He had been involved in bringing the Nazis to power and raising vast funds for Germany’s rearmament.

He was let off – one of only three defendants to walk free.

Schacht argued that he had only been doing his job – plus he was useful to the US in the upcoming Cold War.

The play is told through the eyes of journalist and novelist Rebecca West, and through the imaginings of Kenneth Jupp.

Rebecca West was a fascinating woman.

She is often described as a feminist, but famously said, “I myself have never been able to find out what feminism is.

“I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat or a prostitute.”
