  1. Communists send solidarity to Cyprus

Communists sent a message of solidarity to the people of Cyprus today as resistance continues to EU austerity measures that include a mass savings grab.

The Cypriot parliament rejected plans this week for a tax on savers in return for billions in bailout loans.

The EU-led plan collapsed following mass protests led by communist party Akel.

Communist Party of Britain women’s organiser Liz Payne said that it was the first time an elected parliament had “rejected the diktats of unelected bankers and bureaucrats.”

Among other proposals were a series of privatisations and austerity measures.

But Ms Payne warned that the European Commission, EU and IMF were still determined to “extract their pound of flesh.”

More than half the bank deposits in Cyprus are held by Russian oligarchs.

They hope to tie a possible Russian aid package to rights to newly found offshore gas reserves.

But Akel is pushing for the profits to be channelled into developing industry.
