This video from the USA is called Gabrielle Giffords about Sarah Palin’s violent rhetoric and the Tea Party threats and attacks.

Arizona Shooting Sets Off Debate on Violent Political Rhetoric. Yana Kunichoff, Truthout: “Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona) and seventeen others were shot Saturday after a gunman opened fire at a public event in Tucson, law-enforcement sources confirmed. Six people were killed, including a federal judge, an aide to Giffords and a nine-year-old girl…. The 40-year-old Arizona Democrat was shot in the head once at point-blank range and rushed to University Medical Center (UMC). During a press conference Sunday, Dr. Peter Ree of the University of Arizona Medical Center said that she was out of surgery and in critical condition, but was awake and following commands… The shooting has been connected to the heated political rhetoric around issues such as health care legislation and immigration … [and] Giffords had been the target of death threats, vandalism and harassment in recent months”: here.

Report: DHS says shooting suspect ‘possibly linked’ to anti-Semitic group

01/09/11 09:30 AM ET

Fox News reported Sunday morning that an internal Department of Homeland Security memo obtained by the network indicated that suspect Jared Lee Loughner, 22, is “possibly linked” to an anti-Semitic, white supremacist group.

The DHS memo called the group American Renaissance “anti-government, anti-immigration, anti-ZOG (Zionist Occupational Government), anti-Semitic.” The information reportedly came as Loughner’s computer and personal effects were searched in the shooting investigation. …

[A victim of Loughner's shooting] Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D), who attends a Reform synagogue in Tucson, is Arizona’s first Jewish congresswoman.

Shooting of Jewish Congresswoman Giffords Is Not Just a “Tragedy”. Rabbi Michael Lerner, Tikkun: “Why does what Hillary Clinton once quite accurately described as ‘the vast right-wing conspiracy’ get a free pass when its rhetoric can easily be seen to contribute to the climate of hate from which the actions of this “lone gunman” can be easily understood to have emerged? Isn’t it time for us to demand that our government investigate the violence-generating discourse of the racist and the haters? Why, when the House of Representatives was in the hands of Democrats, did they not have any committee or subcommittee at work holding pubic hearings to explore what kind of legislation might help protect us citizens and our liberal and progressive representatives from the kind of violence that exploded in Arizona earlier today?”: here.

New frog species discovery in Vietnam

Rhacophorus vampyrus

From Wildlife Extra:

January 2011. From the far jungles of Vietnam Rhacophorus vampyrus – the Vampire Flying Frog – has emerged as a strange new species of frog, recently discovered by Australian Museum scientist Dr Jodi Rowley.

This unusual frog has adapted for life in trees, using webbed fingers and toes for moving from great heights and gliding, hence the ‘flying frog’ name. But it’s the strange black ‘fangs’ the species’ tadpoles display which have earned it a vampire nickname. The new species is known only to inhabit a high-elevation area of forest in southern Vietnam, breeding in holes in trees.

Mandarin duck and woodpecker

Today, to the old harbour.

No ice left.

Many mallards and some coots and moorherns.

This is a mandarin duck video.

The male mandarin duck was present. I did not see the female mandarin duck which was there last year.

In the trees of the cemetery not far away: a nuthatch, and a female great spotted woodpecker.
