  1. Greens pledge hefty mines tax

Australia: The Green Party has vowed to fight for the reinstatement of a hefty tax on mining firms if it ends up holding the balance of power following Saturday’s elections.

“As a first step in the new parliament, the Greens will negotiate an adjustment to the mining tax so that it raises an additional A$2 billion (£1.15bn) that will boost the public-school system to fund a range of important areas,” said leader Bob Brown.

His party is hoping to make a breakthrough at the weekend, with polls predicting it could win 14 per cent of the vote – enough to give it the deciding vote in the senate.
