Opposition to Georgia government grows as protesters freed

Thursday 07 May 2009

GEORGIAN authorities have released three protesters who were arrested in demonstrations calling for the resignation of President Mikhail Saakashvili.

The three protesters were detained late on Wednesday, one day after Mr Saakashvili was forced to withdraw claims that he had suppressed a Moscow-backed coup attempt.

Clashes erupted over the jailing of the three activists, who had been arrested on charges of hooliganism and beating a state television reporter.

Scores of protesters rushed to a police station where the trio were being held, after one slipped out a note saying they were beaten and abused by police.

Police armed with truncheons then tried to beat back other stick-wielding demonstrators enraged by Mr Saakashvili‘s handling of last year’s disastrous war with Russia, which gave Moscow effective control over two breakaway provinces.

Opponents have demanded he resign over the war and over allegations of authoritarian rule. He has refused and said he will remain in office through to the end of his term in 2013.

Ukrainian “orange” minister drunk

Drunken government minister kept off flight

May 7, 2009 – 12:41PM

A Lufthansa plane crew refused to let Ukraine’s Interior Minister Yuri Lutsenko and his son board a Frankfurt-Seoul flight because they were drunk, German police said yesterday.

The Ukrainian interior ministry denied that Lutsenko had been drunk but the country’s president said he was “worried” about the incident on Monday.

Lutsenko and his 19-year-old son arrived in Frankfurt on Monday from Kiev and were to fly on to South Korea, a Frankfurt police spokesman said.

A spokesman for the Lufthansa airline did not give any names but said the plane’s captain had decided not to let to Ukrainian passengers board the plane for “safety” reasons.

The minister and his son finally took a flight on Tuesday.

Ukrainian interior ministry spokeswoman Inna Kyssil admited that there had been a “little conflict” involving Lutsenko at Frankfurt airport but said it was because there had been a delay in the Kiev-Frankfurt flight. “Nobody was drunk,” she insisted.

Kiev airport said that none of the three flights to Frankfurt had arrived late.

Ukraine’s President Viktor Yushchenko, who has tense relations with the minister, said in a statement he was “worried” by the incident and had asked Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko to carry out an investigation in two days.

Presidential advisor Bogdan Sokolovski said that if the reports of drunkeness were true Lutsenko should resign.

Lutsenko was at the centre of controversy in January 2008 when he fought with the mayor of Kiev after a meeting at the presidency.

Mr Lutsenko is considered to be one of the “heroes” of the “Orange revolution” in Ukraine.

From the Kyiv Post:

Internal Affairs Minister and leader of the People’s Self-Defense public movement Yurii Lutsenko said that the “orange revolution” has changed Ukraine, he told this to the press at the exhibition dedicated to the anniversary of the “orange revolution” on Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv.

Yeah, sure it did. They know as far away as Frankfurt by now.

Hares, godwits, grebe’s nest

Today, to the nature reserve.

Of the two white storks, I could only see the heads. One protruding from the nest; the other one protruding from a ditch of a lower level than the meadow around it.

In the forest: many speckled wood butterflies.

Sounds of green woodpecker, robin, chiffchaff.

An Egyptian goose swimming in the castle pond.

On the meadow: hares, shelduck, black-tailed godwit, oystercatchers, lapwing, grey lag goose, Canada goose, coot, mallard, jackdaw, starling.

Barn swallows flying over the meadow.

Later, in a canal near the castle pond, coots with chicks. A great crested grebe, sitting on a nest built on rhododendron branches hanging in the water.

This is a video of a coot’s nest with chicks in the Herengracht in Amsterdam.

Later still, on a small raft near a rowing boat business in the Galgewater, a coot’s nest with chicks.
